Ethical Shopping: Meat Processing is Major Cause of Global Warming

When is the last time you heard about climate change and global warming? Probably yesterday, or 5 minutes ago as you were listening to NPR. When is the last time you heard that one of the primary contributors to global warming is the factory farming and meat processing industry? Probably never, or seldom at the most. This topic is often set aside. Why? Our best guess is that people don’t want to give up eating their affordable burgers – just like we don’t want to stop filling our closet with those great sales from the Gap.

Ecowatch states, “[Factory farms] contribute directly to global warming by releasing vast amounts of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere—more than the entire global transportation industry. The air at some factory farm test sites in the U.S. is dirtier than in America’s most polluted cities. . . animal agriculture is responsible for 18 percent of all human-induced greenhouse gas emissions, including 37 percent of methane emissions and 65 percent of nitrous oxide emissions. The methane releases from billions of imprisoned animals on factory farms are 70 times more damaging per ton to the earth’s atmosphere than CO2.”
